There are multiple ways to get involved and to find community during your time here at UVA. You can do so through joining a student organization, creating your own student organization, or getting plugged in with the local Charlottesville community.
How to create your own C.I.O.
The process to create a new Contracted Independent Organization (C.I.O.) is coordinated by Student Council and takes approximately 4 - 6 weeks from start to finish.
We recommend coming to talk to a Student Activities staff member or a Student Council member involved in the process about your idea before submitting an application. We can talk you through the process and connect you to other organizations with similar interests/visions.
To learn more about how to create a new C.I.O., please visit this page on the Student Council website.
Getting involved in Charlottesville
Plenty of students find their niche outside of student organizations at UVA. There are numerous volunteer opportunities, employment options, and community organizations to explore. Visit the Public Service website for some ideas or set up a time to come talk with us about other options.
“YourUVA” Student Life Blog
“YourUVA” is a student-led project and multimedia endeavor to reflect student life and to celebrate the multifaceted identities, experiences, and cultures that make up our community. This initiative was created by two students (CLAS ‘17) working out of the Student Activities office and illuminates student voices and perspectives with student spotlight articles, photo galleries, podcasts/videos, and more.
